What Is the Gottman Method?
The Gottman Method is an approach to couples therapy developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, based on 40+ years of research with over 3,000 couples. Unlike approaches based on theory alone, the Gottman Method is built on observable data about what actually makes relationships succeed or fail.
The Sound Relationship House
Gottman's model for healthy relationships has 7 levels, built from the ground up:
- Build Love Maps โ Know your partner's world: their hopes, stresses, joys, history
- Share Fondness & Admiration โ Express appreciation, respect, and affection
- Turn Towards Instead of Away โ Respond to bids for connection
- The Positive Perspective โ Maintain a positive view of your partner
- Manage Conflict โ Accept influence, dialogue about problems
- Make Life Dreams Come True โ Support each other's aspirations
- Create Shared Meaning โ Build rituals, roles, goals, and legacy together
The Four Horsemen
These four patterns predict divorce with over 90% accuracy:
1. Criticism
Attacking your partner's character rather than addressing a specific behavior. "You always..." or "You never..." statements.
2. Contempt
The most destructive pattern. Includes eye-rolling, mockery, name-calling, and hostile humor. Communicates disgust and superiority.
3. Defensiveness
Playing the victim, making excuses, or counter-attacking instead of taking responsibility.
4. Stonewalling
Withdrawing from interaction, shutting down, or giving the silent treatment. Often a response to emotional flooding.
The Antidotes
- Criticism โ Gentle Startup: Start with "I feel..." about a specific situation
- Contempt โ Build Culture of Appreciation: Regular expressions of gratitude
- Defensiveness โ Take Responsibility: Accept even a small part of the issue
- Stonewalling โ Self-Soothe: Take a 20-min break, then return
Repair Attempts
The #1 predictor of relationship success is not avoiding conflict โ it's the ability to repair after conflict. Repair attempts are any statement or action that prevents negativity from escalating.
Examples: "Can we take a break?" / "I'm sorry, let me try again" / Using humor to defuse tension / Reaching for your partner's hand.
